Going on an extended business trip can be exciting, but the logistics of it aren’t always as easy as you might expect. Especially if you’re going to be gone for a few months, packing and traveling can become major issues. If you’re going to stay in temporary corporate housing, and many people do, here are a few tips and tricks for packing for your trip that will save you space and probably a couple of headaches.
1. Resist the urge to bring everything.
Going on a long business trip can feel stressful and you might think that you’re going to basically need to move your entire life to the place you’ve been assigned, but don’t. Though the average length of a stay in corporate housing rentals is 88 days, don’t feel like you need to make a small, semi permanent move. Even short term rentals are equipped with furniture, dishes, and linens so you don’t need to bring them.
2. Plan outfits strategically.
You will, of course, need to bring your own clothes and personal care items. When it comes to clothing, things can add up quickly so it’s important to pack very strategically. Limit yourself to only bringing two suits — and make sure one of them is black. Pack as many neutrals as possible since they’re the easiest to match, so you can pack fewer things than you would need to otherwise.
3. Definitely bring some personal items.
Staying in temporary housing can make a person a little homesick, so while you shouldn’t feel compelled to bring a lot of things with you (what could you possibly need to bring to already furnished apartments) you should bring a couple of personal items with you to make things feel a little more like home — like family photos or small mementos.
